Password Protection

Overview

Password protection allows you to control HTTP access to individual files and directories.

When a user attempts to access a protected file or directory, his/her web browser generate a dialog box prompting for a login name and password before access is allowed.

Users can also be placed in one or more groups. Access to files and directories can then be restricted by groups. For example, you might divide users into "standard" and "premium" groups based upon the cost of their subscription. Some files would be accessible to the public, more files to "standard" and "premium" group members, and access to the greatest number of files to "premium" group members.

Note:
Password protection only prevents HoloWWW from communicating with someone unless a correct password is specified. It does not provide a secure channel. For commerce level security see: Secure Transactions.

Apache or CERN

Your site can be either on a CERN or Apache server, and the implementation of password protection schemes differ between the two server types. The majority of our sites are on Apache servers, but please contact us to verify what type of server your site is on before proceeding. If you have a preference, we may be able to move your site from one type to the other.
